How did I become paralysed?

26/06/2021

FND is a neurological condition that is normally triggered as a result of years of mental trauma than a physical trauma which basically pushes the brain over the edge. The brain then finds a way of coping with everything going on which can be having seizures, paralysis, tics etc.

This story all starts last February when I began to have headaches so bad it felt like my head was sandwiched under Buckingham palace and every time I stood up my vision would reduce to a small patch in the centre. Apparently, that wasn't normal. Then started a week of medical testing. Ophthalmology picked up that my optic nerves were horrendously swollen, they then explained that this is probably because my spinal fluid is under immense pressure. I then had an emergency MRI scan just to confirm there was no tumour causing this pressure which thankfully was clear. The next step was to have a lumbar puncture to confirm my spinal fluid is under high pressure and to drain the excess, which is where my FND started.

After that lumbar puncture, my right leg would stop working for 10 mins every few days which was highly concerning considering every doctor I saw was telling me that this couldn't have happened. Then lumbar puncture 2, my left leg stopped working altogether. I had a full feeling on the outside but I had no concept of the muscles on the inside. For the doctors overseeing my admission, this was highly concerning and within 2 hours I had been seen by neurology. At last, I had an answer. I was told I had FND and I can expect to see many weird symptoms. 2 weeks later I was back in the hospital because I began to have seizures. These seizures turned out to be due to my FND and are non-epileptic. So life went on, I was having seizures every 2 hours as well as using crutches because my leg was useless so my arms had to take over.

Then April the 12th I woke up with no concept of my legs at all. No feeling in my legs or movement. I spent 10-15 mins crying, panicking that my life was over. That's when my brain kicks in and goes 'how are you going to get trousers on your legs and I started learning how to do everything again. It took me 40 mins that the first day to get dressed something that now only takes me 30 seconds.

Then I got thinking of the multiple times we have seen my FND before. At the age of 12, I spent 6 weeks on crutches because a stair gate was dropped on it and my brain decided it couldn't use that foot anymore. Or the time I spent a year on and off unable to use my knee due to hyperextending it on a trampoline. Throughout my life, you can see little glimpses of the FND rearing its head but it was only till the lumbar punctures that it took hold.
